Adrift: Ronnie McFall warns derby is a ‘must win’ game

Portadown boss Ronnie McFall feels his side are beginning to spring to life after a lacklustre start to their Danske Bank Premiership campaign.

The Ports let slip a two-goal lead against Glenavon in the mid-Ulster derby at Shamrock Park in midweek but they did raise their game and showed fresh drive and determination.

Three wins in eight matches represents a disappointing return but they are two points off a top four place and have the talent in the dressing room to take off on a winning run.

A victory at home to Coleraine today would lift them above the fourth-placed Bannsiders.

Since winning 2-1 at Ballinamallard United, the Ports failed to win any of their next four league battles but McFall was encouraged by some aspects of their performance in the derby showdown.

"We played really well for 75 minutes, they then pulled one back but I thought Sean Mackle getting sent off changed the game," said the Ports chief.

"I thought the decision was harsh, it was just two players going for the ball.

"The tackle by (Mark) Sykes on (Jake) Richardson was worse.

"It was a big improvement for us on last Saturday (the 3-3 home draw with Dungannon Swifts). We were more like ourselves, so we just have to keep it going. The Coleraine game will be another hard one.

"They've started well. We've still a few players missing or still not 100 per cent, but when we've got our full squad together we will be fine."

Mackle must serve an automatic one-game ban following his sending-off.

Meanwhile, Glenavon head to Windsor Park for a date with Linfield after coming out on top in three of the four meetings between the sides in the last campaign.
