New blood: Conor Washington could come into the NI fold

QPR have pounced to sign striker Conor Washington who has high hopes of being Northern Ireland's next big thing.

After scoring 15 goals for League One outfit Peterborough United this season, Washington has become a wanted man amongst Championship sides with QPR jumping to the head of the queue with a £3million bid.

Washington will have a medical at QPR today and discuss personal terms.

The 23-year-old has been watched recently by Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill, who is considering giving the uncapped forward an opportunity to join the Euro 2016 party.

English-born Washington qualifies to play for Northern Ireland through the grandparent rule, and is expected to be called up for the March friendlies against Wales and Slovenia to see if he has what it takes to break into O'Neill's plans for France.

With Charlie Austin moving from QPR to Southampton in a £4million deal, Hoops boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was determined not to waste any time signing a replacement.

Peterborough Director of Football Barry Fry said: "The deal isn't done until the paperwork is completed, but QPR are the only ones we are currently involved with regarding the sale of Conor.

"QPR have made an offer that's acceptable to the club and the player wants to go which is perfectly understandable. We believe the deal is a good one for Posh and will be a good one for Conor."

Another party to benefit from the deal will be Warren Feeney's Newport County.

When the Welsh club sold Washington to Peterborough last year, a sell-on clause of 20 per cent of the fee was included in the transfer.
