Record numbers set for 2014 Foyle Cup

Foyle Cup chairman Michael Hutton is promising to make the 2014 event the best ever.

After welcoming a record 230 teams in 2013 as the tournament reaped the benefits of Londonderry's status as UK City of Culture, entries are now open for next year's Foyle Cup, which will run across the north-west area from Monday July 21 to Saturday July 26.

Again there will be eight age ranges for boys, from under-10 to under-17 plus an under-19 competition. There will be under-11 and under-13 tournaments for girls, as well as a 14-plus category.

Again the organisers are anticipating huge interest from across Ireland as well as entries from England, Scotland and further afield for a competition that has grown beyond recognition since it began in 1992.

"How do you judge success? Is it judged on the number of entries? We had that with over 230 teams competing last year and probably even more this year," said Hutton.

"Is it judged on the quality of entry or how far teams travel? We attract a high quality of entry with teams from Premier league in Scotland and England competing annually and teams travelling from as far away as Canada and America.

"Is success gauged on the quality of pitches? Then for sure the Foyle Cup ranks as one of the best for the compliments received annually highlight that fact.

"Is success based on on the number of spectators? Well if so, 2014 will be our biggest and best yet."

Entry forms are now available for downloading from the Foyle Cup official website at: www.foylecup.com.

They can also be obtained by sending an email to: foylecup@me.com.
