Shamrock Rovers ready to unveil Kenny

By Daniel McDonnell

The 2012 League of Ireland title race could be in for a dramatic conclusion as defending champions Shamrock Rovers will visit Sligo Rovers on the final day of the campaign.

Shamrock Rovers chiefs had little time to pay attention to the fixture list when it was released yesterday as they sought to complete negotiations with Stephen Kenny and also agreed a new deal with midfielder Gary McCabe.

Derry City are trying to hold on to Kenny, who will have to move his family back to Dublin from a settled home in Donegal.

However, the Hoops anticipate no problems and hope to unveil the 40-year-old today.

Insult was added to injury for Derry when the initial list of fixtures released from Abbotstown suggested that their three meetings with Rovers in 2012 would all take place in Tallaght.

Several other clubs spotted similar aberrations and it soon became apparent that the wrong teams had been been given home advantage in two series of fixtures. The FAI quickly made the necessary alterations and sent out a correct list.

The 12 will play each other three times.

In that regard, Sligo will be happy that the title holders will visit the Showgrounds twice.
