Shiels without seven players for semi-final trip to Rovers
Derry City will be without SEVEN first team players for today's EA Sports League Cup semi-final at Sligo Rovers.
Kenny Shiels is hoping it is third time lucky today as he takes his team to the Showgrounds for what is his third semi-final in his time in charge at the club, but he admits that it will be a 'big ask' for his team .
Eoin Toal, Darren Cole, Gavin Peers and Jamie McDonagh will all miss today's game through suspension, whilst striker Ally Roy is cup-tied, having appeared in the competition with Sligo earlier in the season.
Conor McDermott and Nicky Low meanwhile, are still ruled out through injury. And with Rory Patterson now a Crusaders player and Niall Logue out on loan at Finn Harps, Shiels has serious concerns over his starting eleven.
As a result, reserve team players Kieran Farren, Cathal Farren, Shane McNamee, Adrian Delap and Evan Tweed have all been drafted into the squad for today's game.
"It's a big hole and it's just unfortunate but we're going to do our best to get to the cup final," Shiels stated.
"We can't be too negative because we've done really well to get to the semi-finals. It's just cruel the way the suspensions have fallen but hopefully our boys will learn.
"It's just a pity with the players we have missing but that's what the squad is about. We would love to get into a final.
"It's my third semi-final at Derry and I want this to be a happier occasion. We have had a lot of things go wrong recently but hopefully we will have some light at the end of it."
