Striker Onuachu rocks Derry with impressive hat-trick

Derry City 1 FC Midtjylland 4 - Midtjylland  win 10-2 on aggregate

By Eoin Wilson

A hat-trick from giant striker Paul Onuachu ensured that FC Midtjylland made it double figures over two legs against Derry City. With the tie over as a contest after the 6-1 first leg result in Denmark, this game at Sligo Showgrounds - the Brandywell is being redeveloped - was just about Derry's pride.

It took just seven minutes for Midtjylland to break through.

A superb ball by Andre Romer in behind Rory Holden set Riiwan Hassan racing down the right and his low ball into the heart of the Derry penalty area was simply side-footed in by Onuachu.

Midtjylland attacked again and after Gerard Doherty pushed an effort from Simon Kroon wide for a corner, City were caught short from yet another set-play, Jakob Poulsen's delivery hooked in too easily again by Onuachu, just six minutes before half time.

Rather than feel sorry for themselves, Derry hit right back and finally enjoyed a bit of luck as a clearance deflected into the path of Aaron McEneff, who hooked the ball past Hansen and into the net to get Derry back into the game.

Onuachu set up substitute Gustav Wikheim who scored with his first touch just before the hour.

Onuachu finally got his treble on 70 minutes to make it 4-1 to Midtjylland on the night and 10-2 on aggregate.
