Down Area Winter Football League round-up, August 23

It has been another enthralling weekend in the Down Area Winter Football League. After a full Wednesday fixture list, which saw Greenwell Star draw 3-3 with Brentwood and Ravenhill put 10 past Willowfield Parish, Saturday continued the rapid momentum of the Premier Division with six tense, high-scoring encounters.

Moat Park got their season back on track with a 4-2 win over Pat Egan's Vision Athletic, who are struggling to compete in this early part of the season. With zero points from three games, they are firmly rooted to the bottom of the table and must stop conceding so freely if they are to avoid being cut adrift from the rest of the league.

It was the Old Boys vs the Young Men as 8th took on Ravenhill at Henry Jones Playing Fields. Although the age of adulthood is still up for dispute, the game ended with a 3-1 away win and three points, to keep Ravenhill on top of the league on goal difference. Six teams remain undefeated, but with the fixtures coming thick and fast, it won't be long before we have a clear indication of which squads are capable of challenging for the title in May.

Newly-promoted Abbey Villa III and North Down are finding life at the top to be a challenge, but both must be confident of recording their first victory of the season as they face off in Millisle on Wednesday evening.

3rd Bangor OB are now the only team to take maximum points in their opening three fixtures, as they lead the way in Division One. A 3-1 victory over Clandeboye YM helped maintain a two-point lead over local rivals Bangor Rangers III in the race for promotion, while at the other end of the division, another local side, Bangor YM III are finding things a lot more difficult. They have failed to register a point so far and, having conceded 12 goals in three games, they must strengthen their defence if they are to keep up with the teams around them.
