Down Area Winter Football League round-up, March 19

In the Sittlington Cup, it was a mouth-watering clash between the top two teams, Greenwell Star and Moat Park Rangers.

A close encounter was expected, and that's what it turned out to be, as Greenwell edged into the next round, courtesy of a closely-fought 2-1 victory, which keeps their 'Grand Slam' challenge of the Premier Division, Jigsaw Financial Billy Allen Memorial and Sittlington Cup going.

They were joined in the next round by 3rd Bangor, who beat Vision Athletic 3-2 and Corrymeela, who beat Bangor Rangers III 5-1.

In the Premier Division, third-placed Brentwood and fourth-placed Comber Young Men kept the pressure on each other, as Brentwood eased to a 4-0 home win over 8th OB and Comber YM beat near rivals North Down 4-1. Bottom-placed Comber Star's poor season continued, as they were beaten by Jigsaw Financial Billy Allen Memorial finalists, Newtown Forest, 6-3.

In Division 1, Agape's relentless charge towards the title and promotion continued, as they eased past 6th placed Ards Rangers III 4-1 and fourth-placed Newtownards RBL were the day's highest scorers, as they comprehensively beat Castlereagh FC 82 8-2.

Division 2A mirrors the Premier Division, with Greenwell Star II and Moat Park Rangers II the two outstanding teams challenging each other. Greenwell maintained their slender two-point lead at the top, as they comprehensively disposed of Corrymeela II 6-1, but Moat Park kept their own challenge on track as they disposed of Vision Athletic II, 4-0. In Division 2B, second-placed Clonduff II lost ground on leaders Comber YM II as they were beaten by fourth-placed Bangor Rangers IV 2-1, a result that keeps Bangor Rangers' own promotion challenge on track.

Highest scorers of the day were Clonduff in the Frank Moore Memorial Cup, as they scored 13 without reply against a sorry Shorts III outfit.
