Down Area Winter Football League round-up, February 6
Despite the poor weather, there was a lot of football played in both league and cup games.
In the Premier Division, the only surviving game was last year's champions Brentwood's away fixture to Newtown Forest, and we were treated to an eight goal thriller as Brentwood won 5-3 and firmed up their 3rd placed position.
In Division 1, with leaders Agape's game a victim of the weather, second-placed Clonduff had the opportunity to close the gap at the top against lowly Willowfield Parish, and they duly delivered an impressive performance, as they coasted to an 8-0 win to close the gap to one point. It was third against fourth as Ballygowan entertained Queens Grads III, but the 2-2 draw didn't do either team any favours, as they lost further ground on the top two.
Division 2A saw a battle of the bottom two teams as Comber Star II entertained North Down II, knowing a win would bring them level on points with their opposition, but a 2-1 defeat means there are now six points between them - so are last years Division 2B champions doomed to go back down, or will there be further twists between now and end of season? 3rd Bangor II moved up to third place courtesy of a 3-1 win over Corrymeela II. In Division 2B, Comber YM II moved to the top, as they hammered Oakfield Breda II 8-1, as they continue their push for an immediate return to Division 2A following their relegation last season.
The Jigsaw Financial Billy Allen Memorial Shield saw Greenwell Star coast into the next round following a 7-1 win over Abbey Villa III and they were joined in the next round by Vision Athletic, who beat Stranmillis 37th OB 3-0. In the Mervyn Bassett Reserve Team Cup, Clonduff II edged past Bangor Rangers IV 3-2 and Queens Grads IV joined them in the next round following a 4-2 win over 43rd Dundonald II. In the Tommy Murphy Memorial Shield Group A, Moat Park Rangers II had a 4-0 win over 8th OB II.
