Down Area Winter Football League round-up, January 17

We'll start this week at Blanchflower, where Corrymeela hosted North Down in what was a vital game for both sides.

Corrymeela have been flirting with the prospect that they may be genuine title contenders for some time, whilst North Down have been hovering uncomfortably above the relegation zone since the beginning of the season.

Three points for either side could prove crucial come the end of the campaign, but on this occasion it was the home team that came away with the spoils after a highly competitive 4-2 win.

With a large part of the season still remaining, Corrymeela have already passed their points total from last year and some may view this as a success, however, having gone this far with genuine title prospects, it's likely that anything but first place will ultimately be viewed as a disappointment.

The other Blanchflower side, Vision Athletic, are not having such a positive year. They have been battling relegation since the opening week and Saturday's 7-2 defeat at the hands of Greenwell Star put to rest any thoughts they may have had of building on the victory achieved the week previous.

League leaders Brentwood further increased their goal difference advantage by defeating Willowfield Parish 12-0 at Westwinds Playing Fields, 8th OB pulled clear of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Abbey Villa III and Ravenhill YM made it three wins on the trot with a 3-1 victory over Moat Park Rangers.

In the Premier Division's remaining fixture, Comber Young Men dropped two points, as they could only manage a 1-1 draw at Oakfield Breda, meaning they have fallen behind in the race for top spot.

There was another 12-goal display in Division One, as Ballygowan defeated Ards Rangers III 12-1 at Moss Road, Newtown Forest were 2-1 winners in their game against Stranmillis 37th OB and 3rd Bangor OB's unbeaten run continues with their 3-0 victory over Bryansburn Rangers III.

Bangor Swifts III took the three points with a 4-2 win over Agapé, 82nd moved into forth place as they defeated Bangor YM III 2-1 and Queen's Graduates III's promotion prospects may have completely disintegrated with their 2-0 defeat by 43rd OB.

In Division 2A, Vision Athletic II lost 1-0 to Bryansburn Rangers IV, North Down II defeated Newtown Forest II 2-0 and Moat Park Rangers II moved a staggering 13 points clear at the top with their 5-0 win at 3rd Bangor OB II.

Greenwell Star II's game against Ravenhill YM II was postponed, whilst Comber YM II and 43rd OB II both claimed wins at home over Brentwood II and Corrymeela II respectively.

Agapé and Queen's Graduates IV's game ended 2-2 and Comber Star II drew against Abbey Villa IV in Division 2B which provided Stranmillis 37th OB II with the the opportunity to move level on points at the league summit with their 5-0 win over Ballygowan.
