Down Area Winter Football League round-up, November 29

Last week, 8th Old Boys defeated Vision Athletic to pull four points clear of the relegation zone.

Another win would have seen them move closer to the safety of mid-table, however, this week they took on a Moat Park Rangers side that seem to have overcome their early season struggles. Despite both sides having more than enough chances to put the fixture to bed, the game ended 3-1 to Moat Park, and so 8th OB are still very much in a dog fight at the foot of the table.

Vision Athletic took on Willowfield Parish in the Premier Division's only other game, but, given Willowfield's alarmingly poor record, the result was somewhat of a foregone conclusion. Vision were 11-1 winners and will take the much needed three points, however, they must know that there are much tougher challenges to overcome if they are to survive in the top-flight this season.

The second round of the Billy Allen Memorial Shield got under way this week, with current holders Greenwell Star taking on North Down at Dairy Hall Playing Fields. The Ards side came away with a comfortable 5-0 victory and so the business of defending their title can take a back seat until the next round of fixtures in the new year.

Comber Young Men and 82nd also move into round three, thanks to their respective wins over Oakfield Breda and Abbey Villa III.

In Division One, Bangor Rangers III closed the gap at the top to three points, thanks to a 4-1 victory over 43rd OB, Queen's Graduates III defeated Clandeboye YM 2-1 and Bangor Swifts III claimed an important victory over local rivals Bangor YM III, as their game ended 4-1. Newtown Forest put in their best performance of the season so far, as they came away with an 8-1 win in their game against Ards Rangers III.

Moat Park Rangers II have made it to the mid-point of their Division 2A campaign undefeated, thanks to Saturday's 4-1 victory over Vision Athletic, while their closest rivals for top-spot, Greenwell Star II and Brentwood II, also recorded wins.

Ravenhill YM II defeated Bryansburn Rangers IV 6-2, Newtown Forest II defeated North Down II 5-4 and Corrymeela II played out a gripping 3-3 draw with 3rd Bangor OB II.

As always, we'll end the round-up with Division 2B, with Comber Star II holding on to first place thanks to a 3-0 win at Oakfield Breda II, Agapé II defeating Abbey Villa IV 1-0 and Bangor YM IV drawing 2-2 at home with Queen's Graduates IV. Stranmillis 37th OB II won their game against 82nd II 7-0 and Bangor Rangers IV went two better by defeating Clandeboye YM II 9-0 away from home.
