Down Area Winter League round-up, March 8

Moat Park Rangers outlined their title ambitions with a magnificent 6-1 win over Paul Craig's 8th OB's, which sees the Dundonald men remain seven points clear of the chasing pack.

Falling in behind them, Brentwood earned an impressive three points away from home to Ravenhill YM, while Greenwell Star stretched their unbeaten run to nine league games with a 3-0 win against 3rd Bangor OB.

Oakfield Breda took advantage of Alan Harvey's team's loss by beating Comber Star 2-0, which sees the Belfast boys move out of the relegation zone, while the in-form Vision Athletic put six past Clandeboye YM.

In the remaining fixtures, Corrymeela and Comber Young Men both recorded victories against Willowfield Parish and Castlereagh Colts respectively.

In Division 1, North Down put last week's defeat behind them and went eight points clear with their 1-0 win against Pete Hamilton's Ballygowan.

Second-placed Bangor Swifts III's could only manage a draw against neighbours Bryansburn Rangers III's, while Andy Rendall's Newtown Forest rich form continued with a 3-1 win against Bangor YM III's, resulting in them going third in the table.

Danny Gourley's Comber Rec III's could only manage a draw against Queen’s Graduates III's and it was goals galore in the Abbey Villa III's and Bangor Rangers III's games, with Stuart Lally's side putting seven past 82nd and Martin Preston's men hitting eight against Stranmillis 37th OB.

Alan Meekin's Comber YM II's pulled off the result of the day by beating Greenwell Star II's, with their 1-0 victory putting a severe dent in the Ards men's title ambitions.

That news combined with the knowledge that his well-drilled Bryansburn Rangers IV's had gone top of the table with their 5-2 victory against Vision Athletic II's, would almost certainly have had Alan Ferris smiling last night. In the remaining 2A fixture, Newtown Forest II's beat Corrymeela II's 2-0.

In Division 2B, it was draws all round, with 43rd OB II's and Ballygowan II's sharing the spoils with Agape II's and North Down II's

Michael Best's 43rd OB's marched into the semi-finals of the Frank Moore Memorial Cup, with their 3-0 victory against Agape seeing them set up a clash with Bryansburn Rangers III's.

Brentwood II’s and 82nd II’s could only manage draws against Ravenhill YM II’s and 82nd II’s, while Moat Park Rangers II’s ran out 3-1 winners against Castlereagh Colts II’s.
