Loan rangers boost Town's survival bid

Warrenpoint 2-0 Portadown

By Gareth McCullough

Danske Bank Premiership wins are like buses for Warrenpoint Town at the minute - you wait months for one to arrive and then two come in the space of four days as they took all three points at home to Portadown last night after their triumph over Coleraine at the weekend.

Second-half strikes from on-loan Cliftonville duo Martin Murray and Johnny McMurray did the business for Barry Gray's men as they closed the gap at the bottom to Carrick Rangers to just three points.

The Ports enjoyed the bulk of the possession in the first-half but never truly threatened Jonny Parr's goal with a couple of 30-yard Chris Casement free-kicks going straight into the Warrenpoint keeper's hands.

Before that, centre-back Ken Oman had gone closest for the visitors when he headed over the crossbar following a Casement corner from the right hand side.

Warrenpoint had arguably the best chance of the opening 45 minutes just before the break when Liam Bagnall whipped in a dangerous cross from the left and in-form striker Stephen Murray, who already had seven goals in his last six games, headed wide.

The Ports then had their best opportunity of the half in stoppage time when Garry Breen got on the end of a Ross Redman corner but he headed just wide.

Warrenpoint had a glorious chance to take the lead just six minutes into the second period when Conor McDonald rounded Ports keeper Billy Brennan but his goalbound shot was superbly cleared off the line by Redman.

They did go in front with 19 minutes remaining when Martin Murray collected a pass from sub McMurray on the edge of the box and his left foot shot deceived Brennan to creep into the bottom right corner for his third goal in as many games following his loan move from Cliftonville.

They deservedly doubled their lead with 10 minutes remaining when Stephen Murray slid McMurray in from the left and the striker showed quick feet to race clear and produce a cool finish with his left foot past Brennan.
