McElroy pounces late on to earn Swifts progress to the last eight

Warrenpoint Town 0 Dungannon Swifts 1

By Gareth McCullough

Dungannon Swifts reached the quarter-finals after weathering a second half storm against Warrenpoint Town.

Despite dominating the first half, the visitors scored the only goal of the game late on courtesy of Paul McElroy.

'Point keeper Berat Turker had to be alert to keep out a deflected close range header by Terry Fitzpatrick in the eighth minute, while Grant Hutchinson flashed a 25-yard drive just past the base of the post 10 minutes later.

In between those efforts, Stephen Murray saw his low snapshot comfortably dealt with by Swifts stopper Andy Coleman.

Warrenpoint had their first clear-cut chance of the game seven minutes after the restart when new signing Alan Davidson cut in from the left after a pass from Darren Murray, but he pulled his fierce low drive just wide of the near post.

Coleman denied Josh Lynch and Stephen Murray before the visitors went in front nine minutes from time when sub Thomas Lockhart's low cross from the left wasn't properly cleared by the otherwise excellent Conal McGrandles and McElroy punced to lash it into the roof of the net from close range.
