Warrenpoint Town's revival over as Andrew Mitchell fires up Dungannon Swifts

Dungannon 1-0 Warrenpoint

By Adrian Rutherford

Andrew Mitchell slammed the brakes on Warrenpoint Town's survival charge at Stangmore Park last night.

The striker scored the decisive goal as Dungannon Swifts gave themselves breathing space at the bottom.

On a night when a win would have lifted them off the foot of the table for the first time this season, Barry Gray's side simply couldn't score.

Goalkeeper Andy Coleman was outstanding, pulling off save after save. The Co Down side, who were unbeaten in seven beforehand, also hit the post and had three efforts blocked on the line.

A defensive lapse presented the Swifts with the winner in the 33rd minute.

Jarlath O'Rourke and Ryan Harpur combined well on the left, but it should have been an easy interception for Jordan Dane.

Instead, the defender allowed the cross to slip through his feet, with the ball falling perfectly for Mitchell.

The forward had time and space to take a touch and steer home a left-foot strike.

It was a goal in keeping with a poor quality, error-strewn opening 45 minutes.

Dungannon had been fortunate not to fall behind early on when goalkeeper Coleman kicked straight to Sean Donnelly.

The midfielder cut inside but saw his powerful strike headed off the line by Dale Montgomery.

Just before the goal, Tiarnan Mulvenna collected a raking pass from Martin Murray, slipped the ball past the goalkeeper but saw it intercepted on the line by O'Rourke.

Warrenpoint should have levelled in first-half injury-time.

First, Donnelly's 25-yard effort smacked against the upright.

The ball came back to Mark Hughes who aimed for goal from a similar distance, albeit the angle was more demanding, with Coleman tipping the ball wide.

Warrenpoint came close to levelling early in the second period.

Steven Murray broke into space and whipped the ball across to Donnelly, but Coleman was quickly out.

Soon afterwards he produced a terrific stop to deny sub Johnny McMurray when a goal seemed certain. And he was also out to deny Steven Murray after a slick pass from namesake Martin.
