Watch: Irish League referee struck by missile in 'scandalous' end to Europa League tie
Irish League referee Arnold Hunter required medical attention after being struck by an object during a Europa League tie on Thursday evening.
The official was taking charge of Romanian side Craiova's home leg against Hungarian team Honved when the atmosphere erupted in the final minute of extra-time.
The sides had drawn the first leg 0-0 and with no goals scored on the night either, the tie was seconds away from going to penalties.
However, while a melee broke out involving players from both teams, referee Hunter sunk to his knees, clutching the back of his head. A flare had exploded near the official, who was also struck by a missile.
An ambulance came on to the field although Hunter was able to walk off the pitch to deliberate whether or not the match should continue or be called off.
After half an hour, the game finally resumed with the fourth official taking charge. Craiova won 3-1 on penalties.
