Daniel James spared Manchester United's blushes with the winning penalty in a 5-3 shootout victory over League One Rochdale to progress in the Carabao Cup at a tense Old Trafford last night.

New 17-year-old striking hopeful Mason Greenwood had put United ahead but 16-year-old Luke Matheson hit Dale's equaliser to earn his side an unlikely 1-1 draw and send the tie to penalties.

Stand-in keeper Sergio Romero made the crucial save from Jimmy Keohane as United converted all their kicks .

It was a youthful United side but that won't spare manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer another inquest after a poor run of recent results.

Another 16-year-old, Harvey Elliott, became the youngest player to start a competitive match for Liverpool in their 2-0 away win over League One MK Dons
