Kylian Mbappe given extra one-game ban after Rennes red card
Video appeared to show Mbappe stamp on Rennes’ Ismaila Sarr during the Coupe de la Ligue semi-final.
Kylian Mbappe was handed an extra one-game ban by French league chiefs on Thursday after his red card against Rennes.
The 19-year-old Paris St Germain striker was ordered off after video evidence showed he appeared to stamp on opponent Ismaila Sarr in the Coupe de la Ligue semi-final.
The dismissal triggered an immediate one-game suspension, and Mbappe missed the Ligue 1 leaders’ game against Lille on February 3.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) imposed the added suspension when its disciplinary commission met on Thursday afternoon, with Mbappe making a personal appearance.
The move to turn a one-game ban into a two-match punishment means he will sit out the league match at Strasbourg on February 17, with the LFP decision taking effect from next week.
The LFP announced Mbappe’s ban among a series of disciplinary sanctions on its website, where it stated that Rennes president Olivier Letang would be called to face the commission on February 22 following an incident at half-time in the match against PSG.
Letang will be asked to explain his “behaviour at half-time to the referee and officials”, the LFP said.
