McClean to join Stoke in £5m move after going AWOL at West Brom

By Staff Reporter

James McClean has completed his medical with Stoke City and the Republic of Ireland winger will finalise his move from West Brom today.

McClean arrived in Stoke's Clayton Wood training ground yesterday ahead of his £5million move.

A move away from the Hawthorns has been imminent for Derry-born McClean since he was disciplined by the club for going AWOL last month.

A West Brom statement at the time read: "James McClean has failed to report without permission and will now face internal disciplinary proceedings."

Stoke boss Gary Rowett had previously tried to sign McClean last January when in charge of Derby but West Brom refused to sell, a decision that provoked the ire of McClean.

"I want regular football," McClean said at the time.

"If it's the right fit for me and it provides me with regular football then I'm open to anything.

"I just want to play football. I'm 28 now and the last 18 months have been really frustrating. I feel that I'm at my best when I get a run of games."
