Neymar transfer to PSG confirmed - club's ambition the motivating factor, says Brazilian
Neymar pays Barcelona 222million euro to pave way for move
Neymar's transfer to PSG has been confirmed.
The French club said: "Paris Saint-Germain is very happy to announce the arrival of Neymar Jr to the team. On Thursday the Brazilian striker signed a five-year contract in the presence of the Club’s representatives. Neymar Jr is now committed to the French capital’s club until June 30 2022."
He will wear the club's number 10 shirt.
"His arrival into the Paris Saint-Germain family emphasizes more than ever the club’s aims to rise to the top of world football," the club added.
Neymar said: "I am extremely happy to join Paris Saint-Germain.
"Since I arrived in Europe, the club has always been one of the most competitive and most ambitious. And the biggest challenge, what most motivated me to join my new teammates is to help the club to conquer the titles that their fans want.
"Paris Saint-Germain’s ambition attracted me to the club, along with the passion and the energy this brings. I played 4 seasons in Europe and I feel ready to take the challenge.
"From today, I will do everything I can to help my new teamates, to open up new horizons for my club and to bring happiness to its millions of supporters around the world."
Nasser Al-Khelaifi, President of Paris Saint-Germain added: “It is with immense joy and pride that we welcome Neymar Jr to Paris Saint-Germain.
"Neymar Jr is today one of the very best players in world football. His winning mentality, strength of character and sense of leadership have made him into a great player. He will bring a very positive energy to this club.
"In six years, we have built a very ambitious project that has already taken us to the highest level of national and European football. Today, with the arrival of Neymar Jr, I am convinced that we will come even closer, with the support of our faithful fans, to realizing our greatest dreams.”
Earlier the club tweeted to say "he's coming" with an animation of the Eiffel Tower adorned in Brazilian colours.
The deal smashes the previous £89m world record transfer fee Manchester United paid to bring Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford last August.
It comes after the forward handed Barcelona a cheque for 222million euro (£200m) paving the way for his move to the French league.
It's been reported the Brazilian is on the verge of signing a five-year contract with Paris St-Germain valued at around £155m.
Barcelona said in a statement: "On Thursday afternoon Neymar Jr's legal representatives visited in person the Club's offices and made the payment of 222 million euros in the player's name with regards to the unilateral termination of the contract that united both parties.
As such, the Club will pass on to UEFA the details of the above operation so that they can determine the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise from this case."
All Spanish league players must have a release clause which are often exorbitant to discourage bids.
The transfer could pave the way for Barcelona to make a bid for Liverpool forward Coutinho. However Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has ruled out the Brazilian's departure from Liverpool.
