Tributes have poured in for former England captain Ray Wilkins following his tragic death aged 61 yesterday.

Wilkins began his career at Chelsea before moving to Manchester United and AC Milan, playing for 11 clubs in a career that spanned 24 years and four countries.

Wilkins' former United team-mate Norman Whiteside said: "So sad to hear about the passing of Ray Wilkins, a top guy, a top player and one of football's nicest gents you could wish to meet. RIP my friend."

Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Ray was an impressive football talent and had a fantastic career. He will be missed by us all."
