Northern Ireland midfielder Paddy McNair is set for a £5million move to Sky Bet Championship contenders Middlesbrough.

Parent club Sunderland have accepted a bid from their north-west rivals that would see McNair switch the red-and-white of the Black Cats for the red of Boro.

It is believed the fee has been accepted by both clubs, with personal terms yet to be agreed and a medical still to take place.

Premier League side Brighton had shown interest, making two bids for the versatile midfield man, however both were rejected by Sunderland for not meeting their valuation.

Despite missing most of the season due to injury, McNair was Sunderland's stand-out performer during the run-in, scoring four goals in five appearances in the Championship.

Sunderland made no secret they wished to hold onto the 23-year old, but they have been forced to shop him due to financial restraints.
