Northern Ireland ship four goals to impressive Switzerland

Northern Ireland suffered a 4-0 defeat to Switzerland as their Euro 2017 qualifying campaign came to an end in Biel.

There were signs of encouragement for the Irish, who had been heavily beaten 8-1 by the same team in the reverse fixture in Lurgan in November.

The hosts opened the scoring through Vanessa Bernauer in the 17th minute and Rahel Kiwic doubled their advantage before half-time.

A second from Bernauer after the break and the fourth from Rachel Rinast ensured Switzerland ended their campaign with a 100 per cent record from their eight games.

Northern Ireland finished fourth in Group Six, failing to reach the finals.
