Northern Ireland Under-21s downed by Slovakia

Ian Baraclough tasted defeat for the first time as manager of Northern Ireland Under-21s after his side were beaten 1-0 by Slovakia in Euro 2019 qualifying.

Baraclough had guided Northern Ireland to victories in both of his opening matches in charge despite the team previously failing to win a game in four years.

But their upturn in form was checked in Senica by Slovakia, who moved top of Group B thanks to Laszlo Benes' second-half winner.

Both teams have six points but Slovakia now boast a superior goal difference, as well as a game in hand.

Defeat also denied Northern Ireland Under-21s the chance to make history given they have never won three qualifiers in a row.
