PEC Zwolle beat Heerenveen to keep tabs on third-place Alkmaar

Youness Mokhtar provided two assists.

PEC Zwolle closed the gap on third-placed AZ Alkmaar thanks to a 3-2 win against Heerenveen in Tuesday’s only Eredivisie game.

Wouter Marinus opened the scoring for the hosts in the 23rd minute and Zwolle doubled their advantage five minutes later through Younes Namli, with Youness Mokhtar providing both assists.

Eighth-placed Heerenveen left the pitch 2-0 down at the break but Denzel Dumfries’ 69th minute goal got them back into the match.

However, Zwolle hit back four minutes later, this time after goalscorer Namli turned provider for Mustafa Saymak in the 73rd.

The visitors did not give up and Reza Ghoochannejhad scored with 10 minutes remaining to set up a dramatic finish, but the hosts held on.
