Arsenal must pay £25m for Northern Ireland star Jonny Evans

By Graham Luney

West Brom have slapped a £25million price tag on Jonny Evans as Arsenal step up their hunt for a centre-back.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to bolster his backline and Northern Ireland international Evans is on his wanted list.

However, West Brom want big money for the Newtownabbey-born versatile defender.

Evans is already Northern Ireland's most expensive player after joining the Baggies from Manchester United for £8million a year ago.

Arsenal are hoping to complete a deal for Valencia's Shkodran Mustafi but, amid a stand-off over the fee, are considering other experienced Premier League options including Evans and Southampton's Jose Fonte.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis has already stated he's not prepared to let Evans leave the Hawthorns unless he can find a replacement for the 28-year-old while the Saints are determined to hold onto Fonte.

United are also interested in Fonte but Southampton have shown over recent seasons that their transfer strategy is to complete planned player sales early in the summer and then keep hold of their other stars once the season has started.

Arsenal have also not given up on Mustafi but Valencia are holding out for considerably more than the £25million fee that was initially discussed.
