Arsenal star exodus begins
Troubled Arsenal are facing a New Year transfer window of major departures, starting with the £12million move of French midfielder Francis Coquelin to Valencia, confirmed after last night's Carabao Cup semi-final, first leg 0-0 stalemate at Chelsea.
Star striker Alexis Sanchez, who was left out of last night's starting line-up but came on as a sub, is expected to be on his way next to Manchester City.
To add to manager Arsene Wenger's woes, Jack Wilshire joined a growing injury list as he suffered a sprained ankle in last night's game.
Asked whether Coquelin's departure left the Gunners light on players and if he may look to bring new players in, Wenger added: "At the moment we have five big injuries and hopefully we will get some back ."
Wenger also defended the commitment of City-bound Sanchez, saying: "People don't know Alexis Sanchez. This is a guy completely focused on playing football."
