Berbatov nets United hat-trick

Dimitar Berbatov collected an Old Trafford hat-trick as Manchester United recorded a 5-0 victory over 10-man Wigan at Old Trafford.

The Bulgarian was making only his second Premier League start of the season but he enabled the Red Devils to shrug off defensive worries, adding to Park Ji-sung's early goal in the first half before netting twice more after the break.

Antonio Valencia was also on target for the hosts, who romped home once Connor Sammon had been dismissed for elbowing Michael Carrick.

United opened the scoring when Patrice Evra slalomed into the Wigan box, then picked out Park with a neat cut-back and he fired beyond goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.

However, when Sammon's arm ended up in Carrick's face, it offered referee Phil Dowd the opportunity to send him off.

Yet it did appear the Wigan man was attempting to use it as a barrier to shield a bouncing ball from his opponent, and there was no malice, and very little force, behind the action.

United doubled their lead after 41 minutes when Berbatov converted a cross from Darron Gibson, and in the 58th minute the Bulgarian struck again, smashing home a pass from Valencia.

Valencia drilled his first Premier League goal of the season into the bottom left corner.

Then, after Park was chopped down, Berbatov finished off his treble from the penalty spot.
