DC United confirm the signing of Wayne Rooney from Everton

Major League Soccer club DC United have confirmed the signing of Everton striker Wayne Rooney.

The 32-year old was long expected to make the move to the American capital, and today the club confirmed his signing with a video on Twitter of Rooney pulling on their jersey.

Former club Everton also confirmed the news with a statement of their own.

"Everton and Wayne Rooney have reached an agreement for the player to join MLS side D.C. United on a permanent transfer," read the statement.

"England’s record goalscorer will move to Washington after scoring 11 goals in 40 Everton appearances following his return to the Club from Manchester United last summer.

"Rooney will complete the formalities of his move when the MLS transfer window opens on July 10.

"From everyone at Everton, we thank Wayne for his service to the Club and wish him every success in the next three-and-a-half years with DC United."

England's all-time leading goalscorer follows the likes of David Beckham, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard making the switch to the MLS in the twilight stage of their careers.

While figures weren't released, it is believed Rooney has signed a two-year deal with around $13million, which would make him the highest paid player in DC's history and one of the top paid MLS players.

The striker has joined the MLS' last placed side, with DC United having only gained 10 points from their opening 12 fixtures.

Rooney is due to make his debut on July 14 when DC United open their new 20,000-seater stadium, Audi Field, against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
