Duo promoted to top level of refereeing

Chris Kavanagh and Dan Cook have been promoted to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited Select Group 1 for next season following the departure of Mark Clattenburg.

Clattenburg was one of the most recognisable referees in England but in February announced he would leave the Premier League after 12 years to work in Saudi Arabia.

Kavanagh is the beneficiary as he joins the list of top bracket referees, while Cook will be added to the list of assistants after also moving up up from the Select Group's second-tier , created last year to provide a pathway to elite refereeing.

Kavanagh made his Premier League bow in April when he took charge of Southampton's victory at West Brom in April, while he was the fourth official for the League One play-off final between Scunthorpe and Millwall at Wembley last month.

Cook has been assistant referee at a dozen top-flight matches over the course of the past two seasons.

PGMOL managing director Mike Riley said: "Both Chris and Dan have performed extremely well in their matches as part of the Select Group 2 list, and in the Premier League fixtures they've officiated in to-date. They will both make a positive contribution to the Select Group next season."
