Everton boss Martinez quick to salute 'phenomenal' Ross Barkley after Newcastle win

Everton 3-0 Newcastle

By Robert Jones

Everton manager Roberto Martinez heaped praise on Ross Barkley after the young midfielder helped the Toffees to a 3-0 victory over struggling Newcastle.

Barkley struck twice from the penalty spot late on, including an audacious chip down the middle, after Aaron Lennon had earlier opened the scoring in the first-half.

It was Everton's first league victory since November and will ease some of the scrutiny on Martinez, who oversaw his 100th Premier League game in charge.

It also piles pressure on Toon boss Steven McClaren, however, who saw Jamaal Lascelles sent off.

Martinez said: "Ross is playing a big role in the team and to reach 100 games in the league at 22 is not easy to achieve. He is a phenomenal footballer, a phenomenal person. He took responsibility with both penalties and showed how he is an assured, technical footballer.

"It is fair to say we are learning from painful lessons. We started the game well and were strong in all departments. There have been times where opponents score too easily but we were compact here.

"The second goal was decisive. It made it a different game and allowed us to control things. We showed maturity."

Everton's breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Lennon was picked out by Tom Cleverley and the winger's shot on the turn beat Elliott, who was in inspired form.

The Magpies goalkeeper produced a string of saves in the second-half to keep the scoreline down.

Barkley made the result safe with an 88th-minute penalty after substitute Rolando Aarons brought down Lennon, before a cheeky chip from the spot capped an impressive performance after Newcastle substitute Lascelles was sent off for bringing him down.
