Explained: What Tottenham need to progress to the Champions League knock-out stage after Inter Milan victory

By Gareth Hanna

Tottenham's hopes of making it through their Champions League group are alive and kicking ahead of tonight's game at the Nou Camp.

Spurs saw off Inter Milan 1-0 on matchday five to set up a tense final night of action in group B. The last round of fixtures sees Tottenham travel to already-qualified Barcelona while their rivals for second spot Inter host PSV.

As it stands, Spurs are second in the group, level with Inter on seven points but ahead on head to head record (that's how sides finishing level on points are separated). They're ahead on away goals in the H2H matches, losing 2-1 away but winning 1-0 at Wembley. That could be crucial.

So what do Tottenham need to progress?

How Tottenham can progress to the Champions League knock-out stages

Because Spurs are ahead on head to head record, they need only to match Inter's outcome in the final round of games. So that means if Inter draw with PSV, Spurs must at least draw. If Inter are beaten, Spurs are through regardless of how they fare.

Unfortunately for Spurs, PSV have so far picked up just a single point, so the smart money seems to be on an Inter Milan win. That, of course, would mean Spurs must beat Barcelona at the Nou Camp to progress. Simple, eh?
