Frank de Boer needs patience from Crystal Palace, says Reading boss Jaap Stam

Frank de Boer needs patience from Crystal Palace as he looks to get his philosophy across to the squad, but will know he is on borrowed time, according to fellow Dutchman and Reading boss Jaap Stam.

The former Ajax and Inter Milan head coach was only appointed to the Selhurst Park dugout during the summer, but after starting the new campaign by losing all three Premier League games, De Boer has found his future already under the spotlight.

Should the Eagles get beaten again when domestic action resumes at Burnley on Sunday, then it has been suggested De Boer, who has tried to implement a new system with three at the back, could be shown the exit door.

Stam worked under De Boer as an assistant coach at Ajax.

After last season taking the Royals to within a penalty shoot-out of promotion back to the Premier League, only to lose out against Huddersfield after the spot-kick lottery at Wembley, former Manchester United defender Stam knows all too well about the demands within the English game.

"The club (Palace) made a decision to get Frank as manager because of his way of working and how he wanted to play, but as a manager to go to England to work and get success straight away is not easy, I know that," Stam said in a video interview on www.skysports.com.

"Sometimes, though, as a manager you need to have time as well to build something, to create a certain atmosphere within the group and a certain belief to do well and get results.

"The only thing is - are we patient enough? Do you get the time? And that is not always the case."

While Palace chairman Steve Parish has so far backed the Dutchman, it has been reported former England manager Roy Hodgson, who grew up in Croydon, could be under consideration should results not improve this weekend.
