James plans to stay at Portsmouth
Burnley 1 Portsmouth 2
It is not very often that good news is delivered to Portsmouth, but goalkeeper David James emerged from this rare win with the declaration that he intends to remain part of the furniture at Fratton Park.
Coupled with the assertion from the club's administrator, Andrew Andronikou, that he believes there is still a chance of them avoiding a nine-point penalty, Pompey fans continue to hope the impossible can be achieved. The administrators are looking into every possible factor that could secure the club's long-term future, and will hold talks with the Premier League this week in an attempt to avoid the deduction.
One of the other subjects to be discussed is the prospect of selling players outside of the transfer window. Andronikou will again request special permission to do so and, if given the go-ahead, a number of clubs will be heading towards the south coast looking to pick up a bargain.
The first man to leave is expected to be James. However, the England goalkeeper is focused instead on achieving one of the most unlikely Premier League survival stories in history. "I want to stay at Portsmouth and be part of the most remarkable recovery ever," he said.
Frédéric Piquionne opened the scoring on 25 minutes, but the lead lasted six minutes; Brian Jensen, the Burnley goalkeeper, sent a long kick downfield and Martin Paterson expertly lobbed the ball over James.
Pompey, though, battled back and were awarded two penalties, both after Clarke Carlisle fouls. First, he felled Piquionne in the corner of the area, only for Jensen to push away Jamie O'Hara's spot kick, and then tripped John Utaka with 14 minutes left, Hassan Yebda scoring from the spot.
