Liverpool missed out on their main defensive target during the summer as Virgil Van Dijk remained at Southampton. To make matters worse, they've been criticised for a lack of decisiveness at the other end of the pitch in recent matches. So according to the latest transfer rumours, Jurgen Klopp couldn't be ready to turn to youth to bolster his panel.

The Liverpool Echo report that BEN WOODBURN, Liverpool's Welsh forward, is set to sign a new long-term deal after turning 18 over the weekend. Last month, the Mirror had said that Woodburn's wage would be upped to £25,000 after his 18th birthday -  32.5 times more than the £40,000 per year he currently earns.

And his fellow teenage forward RHIAN BREWSTER is also part of Klopp's plans at the Anfield club, according to the Sun. Several clubs are said to be keen on the 17-year-old, but Klopp is thought to be eager for the youngster not to leave, even on loan, the paper says.

And to add those those to stars of the future, Liverpool could look to bring in Holland defender PERR SCHUURS. The 17 year-old has already captained his Fortuna Sittard side in the second tier of the Dutch football pyramid. According to the Daily Mail, Sittard was invited for a training stint at Liverpool earlier this year and impressed.

In more Liverpool news, the Reds could lose out in their pursuit of German midfielder LEON GORETZKA, according to German newspaper Bild. The paper reports that Schalke have offered the 22-year-old a new contract, meaning Liverpool will have a tough battle on their hands to convince him to move.

Southampton defender RYAN BERTRAND is on the radar of Manchester City, the Daily Mail reports. Pep Guardiola was said to be interested in the England international this summer, and may look at revisiting the possibility of signing him due to Benjamin Mendy's injury. The paper says Bertrand would be open to a move to City - but that Saints would only accept a very large offer.
