Liverpool target Virgil Van Dijk could play for best teams in the world, says Southampton team-mate

By Gareth Hanna

Virgil Van Dijk has the ability to play for any club in the world, according to his Southampton team-mate Steven Davis.

The Saints managed, of course, to stave off interest from Liverpool and keep hold of their club captain during the summer transfer window.

However, the window closed with Van Dijk training alone, yet to feature for Southampton and emitted from the Holland squad for their latest World Cup qualifiers.

Even with all that, Davis was delighted to still be able to call Van Dijk a team-mate.

He said: "Of course he's a massive player. He could play for anybody in the world, he's that good but we're delighted we could hold onto him and hopefully he'll go on to have a good season.

"We've lost a lot of key players over the last few years and the recruitment side of the club have done very well to replace those. Obviously, if you want to go and achieve something, you have to keep  the squad together and keep your best players. Virgil ultimately is one of our best players."

Liverpool and Chelsea were both reported to be interested although Van Dijk was thought to favour a move to Anfield. Whether or not Liverpool will ever get their man remains to be seen. No doubt the rumours will string out to the January transfer window.
