Georginio Wijnaldum's early goal handed Jurgen Klopp victory over Pep Guardiola as Liverpool beat Manchester City 1-0 at Anfield.

Wijnaldum headed the only goal in a tense clash of two Premier League title rivals after just eight minutes.

Klopp's Liverpool proved good value for a result which keeps them within six points of leaders Chelsea, while City were lacklustre.

Tweet of the Match:

"I said to Raheem Sterling You must still be full of energy. He said Why? I said Because you've spent the whole first half in my back pocket." - Boring James Milner @BoringMilner, James Milner parody account.

Star Man: James Milner

The ever-dependable Milner has proved a more than adequate left-back for Liverpool and his latest performance was outstanding. The former City midfielder kept a close eye on Raheem Sterling and repelled numerous other attacks. He also showed he has lost none of his passing ability with some excellent balls.

Surprise of the match:

It was no surprise Sterling was booed loudly throughout by Liverpool fans on his second return to Anfield since his acrimonious move to City in 2015. It seemed harsh, however, that City supporters booed their ex-player Milner in a tit-for-tat measure. Milner won two league titles and hardly rocked the boat in five solid years at City before leaving when his contract expired in 2015.

In with the crowd:

City fans have seen so little of Vincent Kompany this season that he decided to do something about it - by joining the travelling supporters in the Anfield Road end. As good as that was for those who got him to pose for selfies with him, they may be happier when the Belgian is back on the pitch.
