Liverpool's Alex Teixeira bid looks doomed as Shakhtar put outrageous price on striker
Liverpool's bid for Alex Teixeira looks doomed as Shakhtar Donetsk insist the Brazilian striker will not leave the club for less than €70million.
Shakhtar general director, Sergiy Palkin, confirmed today that Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool had a €36million (€32million plus €4million bonus) bid turned down last week and while they are expected to return with an improved offer, it seems highly unlikely that they will meet Shakhtar's valuation.
“Liverpool stopped after an offer of stopped at €32m and a €4m bonus,” Palkin told TV programme Football 1.
“This is the last number that was announced. Our position is that we do not want to sell Teixeira today.
“We will sell him only at the end of the season. We need to have some good results in the Europa League and the Ukraine championship. At the end of the season we will sit down at the negotiating table.
“Teixeira has a compensation charge in his contract - the price is €70m. Please, if someone wants him - let them come and declare themselves.”
Palkin's comments go against what manager Mircea Lucescu said earlier this week when he insisted he would not stand in Teixeira's way with the player keen on a move to the Premier League.
“I don’t want to keep a player against his desire. He wants to play in a big championship,” Mircea Lucescu told FourFourTwo.
“Our president knows when it is the time for Teixeira to go. He’s worth €50m (£38m). He’s incredible, very fast, very good technique. I compare him with other players of the same age who changed [the fortunes of] a club, [Angel] Di Maria for example at Paris Saint Germain. Teixeira can be at the same level, better even. He doesn’t get injured, and every year he gets better and better.”
Teixeira has pleaded with Shakhtar to let him leave.
“It would be an honour to defend the Liverpool shirt," he said. “Yes, it’s correct I want to go there, it’s a huge club and so many great players have passed through there.
“It is frustrating but the manager and club president decided against it so now I am just waiting, trying to be patient.
“I know my agent is still attempting everything possible to help me get to Liverpool. The team received one official offer. It was rejected but I don’t know why because it was a great offer.”
