Lucas Perez focus

New signing Lucas Perez made his Arsenal debut in the 2-1 win against Southampton - on his 28th birthday.

The Spanish forward joined from Deportivo La Coruna.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at his first performance.

Lucas started slowly and hardly got into the game in the first half, struggling which his first touch on easy passes and looking nervous when on the ball. As the game progressed he began to look slightly more like the striker who scored 19 goals in Spain last season, but it was too little and too late for this game and he was substituted by Arsene Wenger just after the hour mark.

Lucas looked heavy on his feet in the first half but as the game progressed and he settled into the team's system his sprints inside the box appeared more promising. Lucas did not look the confident goalscorer the Gunners fans had expected, and he was not running to retrieve the ball after losing it, suggesting he needs more time on the training ground.

With only one shot on target it was not surprising he was brought off for Olivier Giroud as the goal threat was virtual non-existent. His best moment came after 29 minutes when his head connected with a Southampton clearance and found Laurent Koscielny, who drew the Gunners level.

Lucas left plenty of room for improvement in his 62 minutes on the pitch. He appeared to be lacking in confidence, playing in a league that is new to him, and the jury remains out on whether he can be the potent striker for whom Arsenal supporters have been hankering.
