Maloney sticks with Latics
Wigan midfielder Shaun Maloney has signed a new two-and-a-half year contract at the DW Stadium, the Barclays Premier League club have announced.
The 29-year-old Scotland international, signed for £1million from Celtic early last season, is now contracted to the Latics until 2015.
Manager Roberto Martinez said: "We're delighted that Shaun has committed his future to the club."
Maloney has become a key figure at Wigan having started all but two of the strugglers' 22 Premier League games this season, scoring twice.
After three years at Celtic, he arrived at Wigan in August 2011 hoping to re-establish himself in the English top flight after a previous spell at Aston Villa. He has now made 33 league appearances in total for Martinez's side and played a key role in their dramatic escape from relegation last year.
Martinez said: "From the first day he arrived his professionalism and determination to succeed has been outstanding and an example for the younger members of the group to follow.
"Shaun is one of the most technically-gifted British players that you will find, but on top of his style and footballing flair his work-rate and purpose in his performances make him a key member of our future at Wigan Athletic. I'm sure the fans are looking forward to watching him continue to enjoy his football at Latics for a long time."
Martinez has also moved to bolster his squad by signing goalkeeper Joel Robles on loan from Atletico Madrid until the end of the season. The Spanish club had allowed Robles to spend a trial period at the DW Stadium, and Martinez was sufficiently impressed to bring the 22-year-old into his first-team squad.
Atletico confirmed the deal in a statement on their website, which read: "Atletico Madrid and Wigan Athletic have reached an agreement so that Joel Robles, after a trial period with the English club, will play on loan until June 30 with the Premier League team. The goalkeeper will return to the 'rojiblanco' at the end of this loan period."
Robles has yet to break into the Atletico first team on a regular basis, with Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois currently on loan with the club and the established preferred choice of coach Diego Simeone. The 6ft 5in shot-stopper will provide competition for number one Ali Al Habsi and reserve Mike Pollitt.
