Manchester United 'target' Mario Gotze open to transfer

By Matthew Campbelli

German wonderkid Mario Gotze has suggested that he may be open to a move to one of Europe’s top clubs, with Manchester United touted as a possible destination.

The Borussia Dortmund winger was in sparkling form for his country last night, as Joachim Low’s men glided past Kazakhstan in Nuremberg 4-1. He helped his side’s cause with his fifth international goal, adding to the eight league goals he has for his club in an impressive season thus far.

Despite dominating the Bundesliga for the past two seasons, Dortmund seem to have surrendered the title to Bayern Munich this time around. A successful Champions League run may have cushioned domestic disappointments, but Gotze may feel he needs to leave to further a blossoming career.

He said: “Clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United are attractive, and playing in another top league would shape me and help me develop as a player. But I'm not thinking that far ahead at the moment. I'm happy in Germany and am delighted with the way things are going. Anything else is still a long way off."

The youngster only signed a new long-term contract last year, but with the departure of Shinji Kagawa for United last summer, and the possible transfer of Robert Lewandowski, Jurgan Klopp may find it difficult to persuade one of his remaining crown jewels to stay.
