Rory McIlroy questions whether Louis van Gaal is right manager to lead Manchester United

Rory McIlroy has questioned whether Louis van Gaal is the right manager to lead Manchester United.

The world number two golfer is an avid United fan and even posed with his Claret Jug at Old Trafford after winning The Open in 2014.

Speaking to Sky Sports at the Deutsche Bank Championship, he said: "I think the new signings will be good in time, but I'm not convinced LVG is the right man to lead us.

"I don't know, it's a hard one. Everyone is dropping points, and it looks like City might run away with the league.

"At least we're back in Europe, so that's a good thing."

Manchester United have collected seven points from their first four games of the season and have qualified for the group stage of the Champions League following a years absence from Europe's elite competition after demolishing Club Brugge 7-1 on aggregate in their play-off.

Van Gaal has spent heavily this summer with the arrivals of Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Anthony Martial among the most high profile. Understandably, expectations among fans have risen in line with spending.

McIlroy's comments sparked fury among some United fans.
