Manchester Utd v Chelsea: Wayne Rooney in starting line-up at Old Trafford

Wayne Rooney was selected in the Manchester United starting line-up to face Chelsea tonight.

Manager David Moyes chose Rooney ahead of Ryan Giggs to face the side who have had two bids turned down for the England striker already this summer and are expected to make a third later this week.

As if to emphasise his own lack of firepower, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho picked a team without a recognised striker, with Fernando Torres and Juan Mata both named on the bench.

Man Utd: De Gea, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Cleverley, Carrick, Welbeck, Rooney, van Persie. Subs: Anderson, Giggs, Smalling, Lindegaard, Young, Kagawa, Buttner.

Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Lampard, De Bruyne, Oscar, Hazard, Schurrle. Subs: Essien, Torres, Mikel, Lukaku, Schwarzer, Azpilicueta, Mata.

Referee: Martin Atkinson (W Yorkshire)
