Angel Gomes became the first player born in the 21st century to appear in the Premier League when he replaced Wayne Rooney in Manchester United's final-day fixture against Crystal Palace.

He was born on August 31, 2000.

Here, Press Association Sport looks back on selected events from the year of Gomes' birth.


The Millennium Dome was opened by the Queen, having cost £789million to build. It is eventually transformed into a concert and events venue and hosted the gymnastics at the 2012 Olympics. Manchester United controversially took part in the FIFA Club World Championship, meaning they missed the FA Cup that year. They failed to qualify from Group B after losing 3-1 to Brazilian side Vasco da Gama.


In rugby union, Italy were included for the first time as the Five Nations became the Six Nations. The Azzurri beat Scotland 34-20 in their opening game but finished bottom of the table as England went on to win their 23rd title the following month.

Bury's Callum Styles was born on March 28. The striker became the first player born in the 21st century to play in the Football League when he played for the Shakers in May 2016.


Manchester United beat Southampton 3-1 at the Dell to win the title with four games left and eventually finished 18 points ahead of Arsenal, who won eight of their last 10 games but could not stop United.


Wimbledon were relegated from the Premier League after a 14-year stay, being joined by Watford and Sheffield Wednesday, while Charlton won the second-tier title to reach the Premier League for the first time. Chelsea won the last FA Cup final at the old Wembley as Roberto Di Matteo's goal beat Aston Villa 1-0 while Arsenal lost the UEFA Cup final 4-1 on penalties to Galatasaray in Copenhagen.


England lost 3-2 to Romania at Euro 2000 to go out at the group stage. It was Alan Shearer's last international game and the former captain retired with 30 goals from 60 caps. Pete Sampras won his seventh and last Wimbledon title while Venus Williams won the first of her five Wimbledon crowns by beating defending champion Lindsay Davenport.


France won Euro 2000 after David Trezeguet's stoppage-time goal gave them a 2-1 victory over Italy in Rotterdam. The triumph meant Roger Lemerre's team were simultaneously champions of Europe and World Cup holders, having won that trophy in 1998.


Manchester United started their Premier League title defence with a 2-0 win over Newcastle with goals from Ronny Johnsen and Andy Cole. On the last day of the month, Angel Gomes was born.


Sir Steve Redgrave collected his fifth and final Olympic gold when Team GB won the coxless four ahead of Italy at the Sydney Games, and he announced his retirement a month later. Sir Matthew Pinsent also won his third gold medal. Denise Lewis won the heptathalon and Jonathan Edwards clinched the triple jump crown as Great Britain finished 10th in the medal table. In the Premier League, Claudio Ranieri was appointed Chelsea manager .


Wembley closed its doors ahead of its rebuild after England lost 1-0 at home to Germany, prompting Kevin Keegan to resign. Lazio boss Sven-Goran Eriksson then agreed to succeed him and become the Three Lions' first foreign manager.


Rio Ferdinand became England's most expensive player when he completed an £18million move from West Ham to Leeds. David Beckham was named England captain for the first time by caretaker boss Peter Taylor for their 0-0 draw in Italy. The Manchester United midfielder is given the armband permanently by Eriksson in 2001.


Redgrave won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year prize ahead of fellow Olympic gold medallist Lewis and Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson, who also wins the Helen Rollason award.
