Tom Huddlestone and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are extremely doubtful for Tottenham's Barclays Premier League game against Blackpool on Saturday and could even miss Tuesday's trip to Manchester City.

Both sat out last weekend's highly controversial defeat at Chelsea after coming off in the previous Saturday's draw with West Brom.

Midfielder Huddlestone is struggling with bruising on the ankle which went under the knife earlier this season while left-back Assou-Ekotto was forced from the field in the early stages against the Baggies with a hamstring injury.

The pair's continued absence would be a blow to Spurs' hopes of reclaiming fifth place from Liverpool, whom they trail on goal difference.

With their hopes of finishing in the top four all but extinguished by their defeat at Stamford Bridge, overhauling the Reds is their only realistic route to Europe via the Europa League.

Huddlestone and Assou-Ekotto have been key players under manager Harry Redknapp, although the latter is arguably more difficult to replace currently.

Sandro has done an excellent job filling in for Huddlestone and even scored his first Tottenham goal on Saturday, while Jermaine Jenas is another option in the middle of the park.

Redknapp plugged the gap left by Assou-Ekotto against Chelsea by switching right-back Vedran Corluka to the opposite flank rather than sacrificing the attacking threat of Gareth Bale, who can also play left-back.
