Matt Upson is nearing the end of his Leicester injury nightmare and could start playing again next week.
The defender has been out with a foot injury since he signed from Brighton in the summer and is yet to play for the Foxes.
City's under-21s take on Benfica on Monday in the Barclays Premier League International Cup and Upson could feature.
"Matt is training very well at the moment but hopefully he will play some part of a game next week, possibly," boss Nigel Pearson told reporters. "He is making good progress."
Upson's return would ease any defensive injuries worries after Liam Moore and Wes Morgan withdrew from international duty through illness and a persistent heel injury respectively.
Both are expected to face Sunderland at the King Power Stadium in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.
"Liam had an infection which, without going into details, needed medication," said Pearson. "He trained intermittently and is much better now."
The Foxes are winless in their last six games and have not scored in their last four ahead of their Black Cats clash but Pearson is remaining positive.
He said: "We haven't really looked as though we have struggled too much in terms of keeping teams at bay.
"There are games we have lost because of our inability to keep clean sheets and score goals and those together have put us into a difficult run."
