Wembley will inspire Spurs’ rivals: Conte

By Miguel Delaney

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte believes Wembley will become a happy hunting ground for Tottenham’s opponents after his side’s 2-1 triumph yesterday in Spurs’ first Premier League game at their temporary home.

Tottenham have previously struggled in European games at the stadium whey they will play as the construction of the new White Hart Lane is concluded.

After Marco Alonso’s late winner, his second goal of the game, Conte raved: “Wembley is a fantastic stadium. To feel the atmosphere is amazing and it is great also for the opponents. It was so strong for us.”

While Conte revelled in the atmosphere, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino refused to believe Wembley was a factor in the loss. “I think the ‘Wembley effect’ is not the reason we lost the game,” he said.

“It’s not fair to blame Wembley. For me, Wembley is one of the best places in the world, one of the best places to play football.”
