Wolves shock Spurs to grab point
Tottenham were left frustrated as they missed out on the chance to go joint top of the Barclays Premier League after a 1-1 draw at home to Wolves.
Despite Spurs dominating large periods of the match it was the visitors took the lead after 22 minutes when the returning Steven Fletcher scored his ninth league goal of the season from a controversially-awarded corner.
Emmanuel Adebayor had a first-half effort disallowed for offside and the equaliser Tottenham's domination deserved came in the 51st minute when Luka Modric fired a shot under Wayne Hennessey. But following Modric's strike the hosts could not break down a resolute Wolves defence and had to settle for a point.
The visitors fell behind following a controversial Fletcher opener. They were awarded a dubious corner when Kyle Walker was adjudged to have touched the ball on its way out.
Brad Friedel parried Roger Johnson's header into the path of Fletcher and he made no mistake from eight yards.
Dave Edwards might have made it two when he found space in the Spurs box, but he totally mis-cued his shot.
The home crowd urged Spurs on and they thought they had equalised in first-half injury-time, but Adebayor's toe-poke from eight yards was ruled out for offside.
The home supporters' frustration grew after the break as Gareth Bale skied a shot from the edge of the area, but they were on their feet moments later thanks to Modric.
Bale laid the ball off to the Croatian and he hammered home from 20 yards through a sea of defenders.
Aaron Lennon should have made it 2-1 a few moments later but he could only fire in to Hennessey's arms after the Wolves keeper had saved from Modric as Spurs were frustrated.
