Real Madrid v Real Sociedad – story of the match

Zinedine Zidane’s side face PSG in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo hit a hat-trick as Real Madrid warmed up for their Champions League clash with Paris St Germain by convincingly beating Real Sociedad 5-2.

Zinedine Zidane’s LaLiga champions dominated from the first minute at the Bernabeu and were four goals up at the break courtesy of Lucas Vazquez’s opener, two goals from Ronaldo and a superb strike from Toni Kroos.

Sociedad twice pulled back to within three goals in the second half courtesy of substitute Jon Bautista and former Real midfielder Asier Illarramendi.

However, Ronaldo’s third, which made it 5-1, staved off a comeback and ensured his team received a timely boost ahead of their tantalising two-legged European tie.

Tweet of the match

Star man – Cristiano Ronaldo

At the end of the week which saw him celebrate his 33rd birthday, Ronaldo produced an outstanding performance to torment beleaguered Sociedad. The Portugal forward created the opener, scored a hat-trick and struck a post as Real secured a confidence boost ahead of their big European clash with Neymar and co.

Moment of the match

Real were well in control following goals from Vazquez and Ronaldo when Kroos added an exquisite third 11 minutes before the break. The Germany midfielder played the ball out to the right and was then waiting on the edge of the area to receive Vazquez’s cut back and nonchalantly curl a first-time effort into the top right corner.

Data point

Vazquez’s header, officially timed at 49 seconds, was Real Madrid’s quickest goal of the season in all competitions.
