After the success of The Open, another north west sporting event welcomed record crowds yesterday as the annual Foyle Cup youth football tournament kicked off.

Over 400 teams from around the world have travelled to compete in the week-long festival, played across 34 venues in Derry, Strabane, Limavady, Coleraine, Dungiven, Greysteel, Lifford, Killea, Buncrana, Moville and Greencastle.

The 6,000 players represent boys' and girls' teams from Canada, USA, Finland, France, England, Scotland and Ireland, north and south, and include Wolves, Sheffield United, Hearts, Hibernian, Motherwell, Dundee United and Partick Thistle.

Tournament chairman Michael Hutton said: "We very much appreciate the support of our sponsors and the local community groups who provide their facilities every year."
